Vivi Wang, Specialist at AKI Gallery

Can you tell us more about your role at AKI Gallery?

I’m here as an art dealer and art consultant. AKI Gallery has been based in Taipei for more than 20 years, and we mainly wanted to promote local artists. We collaborate internationally with Japan and Germany as well and used to have an office in Germany, but we’re focusing on local artists right now.

Did you fly in for the event?

Yes, this is our first time in New York.

How do you feel about the art scene here?

The variety is very refreshing because the art market in Taipei is sort of shrinking at the moment. But I find that in New York it’s quite prosperous compared to Taipei, and the selling is quite nice.

Is there something that you want to see more of in the Taipei art scene?

The photography in Taiwan is especially quiet in the market. But we found that in America, people understand and respect photography much more than in the Asian market. I was surprised by that. Shen Chao-Liang is our best seller in this show.

I love your outfit. What inspired you to wear this outfit today?

I think outfits are a quiet language. I’m very introverted, so wearing something bright makes people understand that they can talk to me, that I am very friendly and welcoming. I prefer to use outfits rather than words to express myself.
