Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy, Curator

As a curator, what kind of artists do you try to find?

At art fairs you can get pretty overwhelmed. So I’m looking for something really “special”. I look for color, texture, and interesting materials. I’m also constantly looking for artists of color because I’m trying to champion them, so I’m always paying attention to that too.

Are you an artist yourself?

No, I’m only a curator.

What’s the best thing about being a curator?

You get to take the things you love and put them together in a space and share stories about the work with others.

Who are some artists you admire right now?

Bisa Butler, I just saw her show in Harlem. So many others too that I can’t think of right now.

Would you say it’s hard for artists to get into galleries?

It’s all about finding the right person who’s interested in their work and who wants to support their work. So yes, it is very hard to get into a gallery.
